In a highly anticipated middleweight clash, Canelo Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) to claim the vacant WBC middleweight title on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino Events Center in Las Vegas. The first few rounds were close and tactical. By round five, Canelo was overpowering the smaller Cotto and pulled ahead. Cotto went for it with big shots in round eight and had some moments. The fight continued to be close, but the larger Canelo seemed unaffected by Cotto’s shots. Scores were 117-111, 119-109, 118-110. This scores were far wider than what actually happened in the ring. Many are curious if Canelo will fight the WBC mandatory Gennady GGG Golovkin who holds the WBC interm middleweight title.
